The ACDS annual conference for associate deans (Teaching & Learning) and other leaders in science education was held this year at Newcastle University on 18 and 19 July 2019. The program, based on the theme of equity in science, was truly inspiring and the event provided another great networking opportunity. Thank you to Andrew Kepert and his team for their hospitality and for doing an excellent job in putting the program together!

“Equity is an issue that cuts across the business of a lot of Australian universities and one that science has some way to go on,” Dr Kepert said.
“This gives us an opportunity to compare and contrast – to have discussions about comparing approaches and solutions.
“We have speakers who are challenging us, provoking us and providing us with issues to think about.”

Equity in higher education poses serious and interesting challenges to universities. We have an important role in addressing historical and emerging inequities in our communities. The opportunities from university education benefit our students and our communities. In turn, these individuals and communities sustain us, through participation, by ownership of our mission, and through a stable society where ideas, education and science are understood and valued. Equity in Higher Education encompasses inclusive access, pedagogies, processes and policies. At its ultimate, equity is the full inclusion in, and co-creation of, scientific communities of practice.
